Materials planning
Bathroom Tile Planning Guide
1. Break the room into rectangles
Measure each floor or wall section separately. Add the areas together instead of trying to estimate the room as one irregular shape.
2. Record which surfaces actually receive tile
Separate floor, shower walls, tub surround, backsplash and accent areas so you can keep different products and waste assumptions organized.
3. Add a waste allowance
Cuts, breakage, selection and future repairs all consume extra material. More complex patterns and large-format tile may require a larger allowance.
4. Convert area into boxes
Use the coverage printed on the product packaging, then round up to whole boxes.
5. Keep spare material
Matching color lots and styles may be difficult to replace years later.
